No visit to Istanbul is complete without getting on a ferry and feeding the seagulls. They’d appreciate some fresh simit (Turkish bagel) as much as you do (if not more!). So, grab a couple and head to the nearest pier.

A ferry ride and a visit the other side will definitely be worth your while. If time is limited, I would recommend exploring the bustling, easily accessible centre of Kadıköy and neighbouring Moda, on the Asian side of the city. Here, you have independent cafes, small cheese and pickle shops; antiquarians that sell anything and everything. Also, you can take a pleasant walk along the seaside and enjoy spectacular views of Sultanahmet and the Prince’s Islands.
How do you get there? Ferry rides are short and pleasant. Three major ferry companies operate in the city – the state-run Şehir Hatları (translates as city lines) and the privately-run Turyol and Mavi Marmara (The Blue Marmara). You can use your Istanbul card for all; they tend to depart at slightly different times, every 20- 30 minutes. Sometimes, different companies will depart from different piers; sometimes, they will depart from a different departure point within the same pier. Sounds confusing? Don’t worry, you’ll be fine; boards with the departure times and destination are usually displayed in the waiting rooms.

Depending on where you are staying in the city, you may want to take the ferry from Eminönü (which is close to Sultanahmet), Kabataş (a short funicular ride from Taksim Square), Karaköy ( 15 minutes’ walk from the Galata Tower) or Beşiktas (famous for its football team). The ferry ride should last 20 – 30 minutes. The ferry from Beşiktas passes really close to the Maiden’s Tower, providing you with a great photo opportunity.
To feel like an Istanbulite, get a glass of Turkish tea to enjoy during the short journey. A selection of sweet and savory snacks is also available to buy from the on-board cafe.
If you travel with Şehir Hatları, (which, I think, has the newest, most comfortable ferries), you may be treated to a music performance by local musicians. It’s a good idea to leave a small tip to show your appreciation for their skills.
You can choose to sit inside or outside on all ferries. In good weather, sitting outside is really quite special. You can enjoy the splendid views and the seagulls will follow the ferry, in the hope that you’ll share your simit…
